Echoes
During pregnancy you will be offered a number of ultrasounds as standard. Below is an overview of the ultrasounds that you will be offered at the practice:
Early ultrasound
We make this ultrasound at 8 to 9 weeks of pregnancy. We are often asked if we want to make it earlier, but if there is no medical need for this, we prefer not to. At 8 to 9 weeks we know that we will get a good picture of the baby and that we need to see a beating heart. We can also use this term to make the ultrasound externalization in many cases. In some cases, it is still necessary to make the ultrasound internally.
Term echo
We make this ultrasound at 10-12 weeks, but really at least at 10 weeks. We then measure the baby completely. These measurements give a reliable due date which we will use for the rest of the pregnancy. The term ultrasound is necessary if you also want to have the 13 and/or 20 week ultrasound performed.
13 week ultrasound
The 13-week ultrasound looks for the presence of an open back or an open skull. The sonographer also looks at the development of the child's organs. The ultrasound is performed at our practice by the medical sonographer who works at the practice 1 day a week.
20 week ultrasound
The 20-week ultrasound looks for the presence of an open back or an open skull. The sonographer also looks at the development of the child's organs. The ultrasound is performed at our practice by the medical sonographer who works at the practice 1 day a week.
Growth ultrasound
In some cases, it is necessary to perform extra ultrasounds to monitor the growth of the baby. This may be the case if there is a suspicion that the child is too big or too small. We will also schedule this ultrasound if you have gestational diabetes. These ultrasounds are performed around weeks 28 and 32 weeks.
Position ultrasound
Between weeks 34 and 36 we make a position ultrasound to see if the baby is lying with its head down. If this is not the case, we can schedule another appointment to turn the baby.
Cost
All ultrasounds are reimbursed.
