Prenatal screening

As a pregnant woman in the Netherlands, you have the option of having your child examined before birth via prenatal screening. For example, at the beginning of your pregnancy you can do tests for chromosomal abnormalities, including trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). This is investigated via the NIPT test. It is your own decision whether you want to have this done.

The 13 and 20 week ultrasound looks for the presence of an open back or an open skull. The sonographer also looks at the development of the child's organs. If an abnormality is found or if we cannot properly assess certain organs of your baby, we can refer you for follow-up testing to Amsterdam UMC location Meibergdreef. Here they check whether the picture we have seen is correct and discuss with you what the possible treatments are. This research is also a choice. If you wish this examination, it will be performed by our own medical sonographer at a low risk. He or she works 1 day a week at the practice. This is so easy. Occasionally you will be referred if it turns out that we do not have enough space in the agenda.

During the second appointment, we will discuss these different examinations. Below you will find the information leaflets.
